About us

The National Film Archive of Iceland

The National Film Archive of Iceland‘s legal role is multifaceted. Its primary role is to collect, document, and preserve Icelandic films, oversee the submission of film material following legal deposit regulations, and organize domestic and international cinema screenings. Additionally, the archive is responsible for maintaining and restoring its film collection and providing scholars and professionals with facilities to conduct film-related research.

Mandatory Film Deposits

The National Film Archive of Iceland is one of three national preservation archives in Iceland. One of its primary roles is safeguarding Iceland’s cinematic heritage and overseeing the submission of film materials. The organization collects, documents, and preserves Icelandic films, co-productions between Icelandic and foreign entities, and foreign films shot in Iceland. Any film released for screening in cinemas, on television, on physical media (such as discs), or online must be submitted to The National Film Archive of Iceland for preservation as soon as possible after production is completed.

Submission of Other Materials

The National Film Archive of Iceland may sometimes accept film materials that are not legally required to be submitted, provided they have historical or cultural significance and contain Icelandic references. The archive only accepts materials for permanent preservation and does not store content on behalf of individuals or institutions.

If you wish to donate materials for permanent preservation, you should submit a request to the archive. Each request will be reviewed, and a response will be provided soon.
