About legal deposits
The National Film Archive of Iceland emphasises the importance of legal deposits for preserving cultural heritage. Legal deposits, according to Act No. 20/2002 on mandatory submissions to archives, require filmmakers to submit copies of their films to the archive. This ensures that the films are preserved for future generations, made accessible for research, and contributes to the overall documentation of a nation’s film history. The obligation to submit Icelandic films to the archive rests with their producer.

Practical information
A film, according to legal deposit regulations, refers to any type of moving image material, regardless of the technology or methods used for its production. An Icelandic film is defined as a film that is produced and financed by Icelandic entities or as a collaborative project between Icelandic and foreign parties.
The obligation to submit an Icelandic film rests with its producer.
Kindly submit only the requested material unless there is a specific reason to include additional content, which must be approved by the National Film Archive of Iceland before submission.
Materials must be cataloged and clearly labeled. Films produced in today’s digital environment are no less vulnerable to deterioration than the film reels of the past. It is therefore crucial for filmmakers to carefully manage and safeguard all files related to their film production. Ideally, materials should be submitted during the film’s post-production process to ensure access to digital files and associated storage media.
Materials must be delivered on hard drives or via the web. Disks can be returned upon request after copying is complete.
Further information on the legal deposit obligation can be found in the Laws on Legal Deposit and the relevant regulations. Additionally, Chapter III of the Film Act No. 137/2001 applies
